Macedonia Itinerary, Planned by a Local
I live in Skopje, and Macedonia is the country I know best. Whether you are coming for a few days or a week, I plan the trip for you, around your pace and what you love.
Most visitors see Skopje and Ohrid and leave. In between are canyons, old towns, monasteries, vineyards and mountain villages that are easy to reach once you know the order.
You tell me how many days you have. I put the route together, with the places, restaurants and cafés I would recommend to a friend.
Fee: €80
Places your itinerary can include
- Skopje: the old bazaar, the fortress and the cafés I write about on this blog
- Matka Canyon, a short drive from the city, for a boat ride or a hike
- Lake Ohrid and its old town, the classic summer stop
- Kratovo, a small town built inside the crater of an old volcano
- Berovo and the Maleševo mountains, for quiet forests and local food
Planning a trip to Macedonia
How many days do I need in Macedonia?
Three days cover Skopje and Ohrid. Five to seven let you add Matka, a wine region and one of the smaller towns without rushing. I plan around the days you actually have.
Do I need a car?
Not for Skopje and Ohrid, which are connected by bus. For the smaller towns and the countryside a car makes the trip much easier, and the guide says where you can manage without one.
When is the best time to visit?
Late spring and early autumn: warm, green and without the summer crowds at the lake. Summer is for swimming in Ohrid, winter for the mountains.

Frequently asked questions
Can you plan a Macedonia itinerary for me?
Yes. Send me your dates and interests and I plan the whole trip, day by day, as a PDF guide for €80.
Can I combine Macedonia with Albania or Greece?
Yes. Lake Ohrid sits on the border with Albania, and Greece is a short drive south. I can plan a route across all of them; the Balkans itinerary page explains how.
What currency is used in Macedonia?
The Macedonian denar. Cards are accepted in most of Skopje and Ohrid, while smaller towns and markets often prefer cash, and the guide tells you where.
Do you know the places you recommend?
I recommend the places I would send a friend to, and many of them are on this blog. Where I have not been myself, I research them carefully before they go into your guide.
